Troubleshooter of Error: After an Windows XP update I now get a blue screen saying windows has been shut down

After an Windows XP update I now get a blue screen saying windows has been shut down

It recommends disablinng BIOS memory options (which I don't know how to do), and I can't get into safe mode to find out how to do this.  The technical information states:

STOP:  0x0000007E (0x80000003, 0x805C49B8, 0xF7A202B4, 0xF7A1FFB0)

The computer is a Dell Inspiron E1705 with Intel.  How can I access things again and not lose any files?
