Tech Support: Computer shutting down at night. In morning computer power light blinking and monitor unresponsive. Have to restart 2x to get on system.

Computer shutting down at night. In morning computer power light blinking and monitor unresponsive. Have to restart 2x to get on system.

We have had continuous problems so I decided to reformat the computer. First, I reformatted my external drive and I copied over our My Documents, Favorites, Pictures, Videos and Music ONLY to prevent any copying of corrupt data.  After moving our important
data I went to microsoft and after asking the question "how to reformat to the factory image?"  I was told to hit F8 as I start the computer and then go into the Advanced Boot Options and choose Restore to Factory Image.  Well, there was no choice to Restore
to Factory Image  so it said i could restore to a system image but the only one I had was in the D: recovery partition but the computer could not find it through this step.  So then I opened the D drive and tried to access it through the Tools and PCRestore
application.  It started to reformat the computer and then failed with an error.  SOOOOO, then I took out my original Vista disks (I also have my Windows 7 Upgrade disk) and booted to the CD drive and followed the steps to reformat my C: OS disk.  While reformatting
it placed all the old Windows in a separate folder on the C: drive but did this without giving me a choice.  I have spent two days taking the important stuff off and putting the Vista and Windows 7 back on, then I added all my security, ran scans, removed
the Old Windows folder that the reformat program left on my C disk and thought all was well.....then I wake up this morning and the computer monitor is unresponsive and the power light is blinking AGAIN JUST LIKE BEFORE.  Of course there were many other problems
but I thought reformatting the c: drive would do it.  IS THERE A WAY TO REFORMAT MY WHOLE COMPUTER OR IS THIS A DISK PROBLEM?   PLEASE HELP.   I have run AVG, SPYBOT, Microsoft Essentials, and Microsoft's complete scan, repair, maintenance.  I don't know if
the D: drive was corrupt all along or if keeping the Old Windows folder it created allowed a problem....JUST DON"T KNOW WHAT TO DO?

The thing here is that you are mixing up 2 different installation processes with the wrong responsible parties.
Microsoft and Windows don't have factory images, that is something that your computer manufacturer put on the harddrive.
Microsoft has no involvment
with that process so all the guy from MS could tell you was how to start up Windows own system image recovery.
Windows gives you the option to create a System Image when you first install it, which you then have to create and store in some safe place.
 A Windows
system image is nothing like the factory recovery image on D: drive and Windows itself cannot do anything with the recovery partion on your D: drive.
Do you happen to have an HP computer? HP puts their System Recovery software on a D: drive partition.
Their recovery systemONLY
works with the original HP OEM operating system and software still installed on the computer or if theC: partition of the harddrive is completely empty, or even unallocated.
It's an anti-piracy feature.  That's
probably why the system recovery failed when you tried to do it.
When you get the computer with its original operating system you can access the recovery partition 2 ways, either from Windows using a utility in one of the Program Files folders or when you
boot the computer and press the required F-key (which is not F8).
> but the only one I had was in the D: recovery partition but the computer could not find it through this step.  So then I opened the D drive and tried to access it through the Tools and
That's right because the recovery partition can only be used by the HP software or by booting the computer from it.
If the partition is altered or damaged it may not work at all.
>PCRestore application.  It started to reformat the computer and then failed with an error.  SOOOOO, then I took out my original Vista disks (I also have my Windows 7 Upgrade disk) and
Depending on what the error message said it could mean the harddrive has a data error on it or is defective, or this could be because the recovery program detected that the original Vista was missing.
>booted to the CD drive and followed the steps to reformat my C: OS disk.  While reformatting it placed all the old Windows in a separate folder on the C: drive but did this without giving >me a choice.
That part is really neither here nor there since you can just erase the folder.
If you'd forgotten to move something important you would've appreciated that the files were kept.

DON"T KNOW WHAT TO DO?
The D: drive and software are dedicated for use by the manufacturer's System Recovery software and changing the operating system from Vista pretty much disables it.
If your upgrade discs came from the manufacturer it might include a new Windows 7 recovery
partition.
If you used a normal retail Windows 7 upgrade disc then the D: partition only might work to put Vista back on the computer if you are still able to boot from the D: partition.
There is a line displayed on your screen when you first boot that tells
you which F key to press in order to start the System Recovery.
This is something put on the computer by the computer manufacturer and has nothing to do with Microsoft.
The power light flashing on your computer means it was in Sleep mode, not actually turned off.
Going into sleep mode after a certain period of inactivity is a default setting in a fresh Windows 7 installation.
If you don't know which key or button is designated
to wake it from sleep that can be a problem. It depends to some extent on the custom buttons that might be available on your keyboard.
There are a number of power mode settings that control how the Power button on the computer and special keys or buttons (power,
sleep) on your keyboard function when you press them.
There are also settings for conditions that might turn on the computer automatically, or put it into sleep mode or wake it from sleep.
There might even be BIOS settings in the computer (also nothing to
do with Windows) which can affect how your computer has been behaving.
