Cell Reference with LOOKUP

I have a workbook for a class I am teaching with multiple spreadsheets.

Sheet1: Contains master list of students (12 students) A1:A12, alphabetized A->Z
Sheet2: Each student's block of rows, if you will, contains data such as attendance, quiz grades and major test grades
            Ex: A8:A11 is range of rows used for first students with A8:C11 being merged and contains student's name. 

            A12:A15 is second student with A12:C15 merged and contains student's name.
Sheet3:  Students names are in columns E1:P1 and uses cell reference to Sheet2 to place the student name in cell.  Also alphabetized.

Problem (using student1 for example):
Trying to use LOOKUP to find a grade for student and formula will be in cell Sheet2!Q11:    =LOOKUP(A8,Sheet3!E1:P1,Sheet3!E55:P55)
The correct answer should be found in column E of Sheet3.  But it is pulling the data from column P.  Again, the student names are alphabetized on last name, but contains first and last name such as John Doe instead of Doe, John.

If you failed to fix it, another option is to call Microsoft and walk through the process with a technician. To do this, dial "1-800-936-5700". Explain the error that you received and the steps in the update process during which it was displayed.
