Autocorrect Problem

Autocorrect Problem

I am having trouble with Autocorrect.  When I log off Word and then restart it any entries I have made since last boot are not there and any deleted are restored.  I also get an error dialogue box which is full of symbols (looks like Chinese).  Autocorrect
is a vital tool in my work - I have hundreds of entries which I have added/removed over the past 7 years or so and can't afford the time to have to keep typing new ones over and over every time I log onto Word.  I have tried running CCleaner to get rid of
the settings and it restored Word back to original settings ie back to cms (I work in inches) and all my autoformat settings back to originals (ie smart quotes instead of straight quotes etc) but it didn't remove my autocorrect entries.  I have tried changing
the Normal.dot and that hasn't worked either.

Autocorrect is covered at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm.
Autocorrect files are stored by type in ACL files and the normal template, so if allowing Word to rebuild the normal template didn't change anything it seems you have a corrupt ACL file.

Start by repairing Office 2003 (preferably from the original installation disc) to correct the mess that CCleaner may have caused.
(Such programs are best avoided unless you really know what you are doing as they can do more harm than good.)

  • Click the Start button.
  • Type "command" in the search box... DO NOT hit ENTER yet!
  • While holding CTRL-Shift on your keyboard, hit ENTER.
  • You will be prompted with a permission dialog box.
  • Click Yes.
  • A black box will open with a blinking cursor.
  • Type "regedit" and hit ENTER.
  • In the Registry Editor, select the Error 0x9C-related key (eg. Windows Operating System) you want to back up.
  • From the File menu, choose Export.
  • In the Save In list, select the folder where you want to save the Windows Operating System backup key.
  • In the File Name box, type a name for your backup file, such as "Windows Operating System Backup".
  • In the Export Range box, be sure that "Selected branch" is selected.
